KALEY'S KORNER
The World According to Kaley by Dian Curtis Regan, children's books

I, Kaley Bluster, am in 4th grade at Mildred Flutter Elementary. (If you want to know who Mildred Flutter is, my teacher made me write an essay about her which you can find on page 35 in CyberPals, According to Me.)

My teacher's name is Mr. Serrano. He sighs a lot.

Do you like the photo of my "dream puppy?" I hope to get one just like him--soon if not sooner.

My cousin, Cal, is in the other 4th grade. (Mean Mrs. Fritz's class.) Cal and I hope you find some fun things to do here at Kaley's Korner!

Love, Kaley

The World According to Kaley

Take a peek into my notebook. Sometimes history can be boring so I try to jazz it up a bit for extra credit.

I'm not sure Mr. Serrano likes it when I "ad lib" as he calls it, but Cal laughed at my essay on ancient civilizations. (Page 5.)

I think Cal was laughing because he thought the essay was funny and not because he was trying to bug me.  (He does that a lot.)  (Bugs me.)

Things I learned from our History unit:

1. The Ice Age was really cool.

2. The Stone Age rocked.

3. The Wright sisters ruled!

4. The Roman Empire fell--and nobody was there to catch it.

Here's a cool site where you can see what life was like in ancient times:
Mr. Donn's Daily Life Site

And if you'd like to read my entire notebook, you can find it here.

CyberPals According to Kaley

E-mailing penpals in other countries sounded like a cool assignment until Shanay started luring them away. She has her own website! With jokes and games and pictures of cats!

Well, guess what? Now I have MY own Korner of the Internet, too, and YOU are THERE.

I mean, YOU are HERE:
X

Things I learned from our CyberPal unit:

1. How to speak in other languages. (Well, at least how to say "hello.")

2. Spam is yummy even if the computer doesn't like it.

3. There's a BIG difference between a "wedge" and a "wedgie."

4. Never spray fake evergreen scent around Cal. Trust me.

If you'd like to read the whole sordid story, look here.

Your Name in Hieroglyphics!

A brazillian years ago, people wrote in pictures instead of words.

This is "Kaley" written the old, old, old fashioned way. →

If you would like to find out what your name looks like in Hieroglyphics, click here.

Oh, and Mr. Serrano just told me that "brazillian" is a nationality, not a large number . . . ooops.

Hello, Earth!

There are almost six billion (not brazillian) people in the world. They speak more than 3,000 languages.

Gee, I hope Mr. Serrano doesn't make us learn how to say "hello" 3,000 ways. I'll never make it to the 5th grade!

Here are a few greetings:

French: Bonjour                      Norwegian: Goddag
Welsh:
Bore da                      Italian: Buon giorno
Korean:
Ahn nyeong ha se yo        Swahili: Jambo
Hebrew: Shalom                     Hawaiian: Aloha
Lithuanian:
Labas                    Vietnamese: Chao
And my favorite: Buenos Dias! (Spanish)

More Fun Stuff!

(I'll bet Shanay doesn't have these things on her website!)

*World Almanac for Kids (click): a fun site with games and lots of cool facts.

*FactMonster (click) : What I learned at this site:

In the year 2012 when I turn 15, my birthday will fall on a Thursday. (Note to Cal: I did not like your gift of tiny trucks this year, so start thinking now what you'll buy me in 2012.)

*Online Coloring Book (click):
Pick a favorite animal. Print it out. Color! I wanted to color a walrus but the best I could find was a seal. (It's like a walrus--minus the cool, pointy tusks.)

*BananaBoo (click): lots of puzzles, crafts, and jokes. You can even submit a story! Here's a joke I found there:

Why did Cal eat his homework?

Because Mrs. Fritz told him the assignment was a piece of cake!

(It was supposed to make Cal laugh, but instead, he chased me around the monkey bars three times. Good thing I'm faster than a boy!)

*Dogs! Dogs! Dogs! (click): If you love dogs as much as I do, here's a site that tells you everything you'd ever want to know about Cats.

(Haha, just kidding.) (I meant DOGS.)

*Imbee (click):  A free social website for ages 8 to 14 where kids can blog, join groups, and more.  This is a parent approved, teacher endorsed site.

Find your own CyberPal!

First, the rules (says Mr. Serrano):

*
You must get permission from a parent before particpating in any of the CyberPal sites.

*Never put your phone number, address, or the name of your school in an e-mail.

*Use your first name or a nickname only. It's okay not to give your last name.

*Never agree to meet anyone in person. Tell an adult if a CyberPal asks.

*You can stop e-mailing at any time.

Here are some cool CyberPal sites:

A Girl's World (click): offers a way to find CyberPals without posting an e-mail address. (Membership fee required.)

KATE (click): stands for Kids Around The Earth. This is a free CyberPal site for kids 5 to 16.

Author Day

One day an author came to visit our class.  She had red hair like Ms. Bart, our librarian.  She "observed" us (whatever that means).  Then she told us about the books she'd written.

It was weird having her there, but she was very nice.  Funny, too!  She told us a hilarious joke about a goldfish.  I'd tell it to you but I can't remember the punchline.

I haven't read any of her books, but I plan to read the ones that have castles in them.  (I asked.)  I'm sure the books are very very very good.  And probably funny, too.

If you'd like to read more about the author and her books, look here.
